Abstract 24 Analyses of evolutionary radiations have traditionally focused on traits related to 25 resource acquisition, habitat use, and mate choice. Nonetheless, incorporation of climatic 26 niche divergence has become more common in recent years, driven by the development 27 of correlative ecological niche models (ENMs) that allow niche characterization based 28 solely on geo-referenced locality data. However, ENMs require no data on organismal 29 traits that link climatic conditions to performance, and thus have little to say about how 30 organisms phenotypically adapt to different climatic conditions, what the performance 31 consequences of phenotypic divergence are, and how phenotypic divergence influences 32 resource partitioning within communities of co-occurring species. Here, we conduct a 33 functional (i.e., physiological) analysis of climatic niche divergence within Greater 34 Antillean Anolis radiations. We find that physiological divergence occurred repeatedly 35 within these radiations, that there are performance consequences of physiological 36 divergence within natural habitats, and that physiological divergence facilitates species 37 coexistence within species-rich communities. We also use phylogenetic methods to 38 compare rates of evolution of ecologically relevant physiological and morphological 39 traits, and find that physiology has evolved either more slowly or as fast (but not faster) 40 than morphology. Our analysis demonstrates the benefit of a functional approach to 41 understanding macroevolutionary patterns of climatic niche divergence. 42 43 44 45 46. Niche evolution and adaptive radiation: testing the order of trait divergence.

In the course of an adaptive radiation, the evolution of niche parameters is of particular interest for understanding modes of speciation and the consequences for coexistence of related species within communities. We pose a general question: In the course of an evolutionary radiation, do traits related to within-community niche differences (alpha niche) evolve before or after differentiation of...

The Climatic Niche Diversity of Malagasy Primates: A Phylogenetic Perspective

BACKGROUND Numerous researchers have posited that there should be a strong negative relationship between the evolutionary distance among species and their ecological similarity. Alternative evidence suggests that members of adaptive radiations should display no relationship between divergence time and ecological similarity because rapid evolution results in near-simultaneous speciation early in...

Predicting the Climatic Ecological Niche of Artemisia aucheri Boiss in Central Iran using Species Distribution Modeling

Changes in the geographical distribution of plants are one of the major impacts of the climate change. This study was aimed to predict the potential changes in the distribution of Artemisia aucheri Boiss in Isfahan rangelands. Therefore, six bioclimatic variables and two physiographic variables were used under the Generalized Linear Model (GLM), Flexible Denotative Analysis (FDA), Surface Range...

Ecological Niche Modeling of Mountain Vipers from the Raddei Clade in Iran, Caucasus and Eastern Turkey

Mountain vipers of the genus Montivipera, generally, and the species of the Raddei clade, specifically, are interesting examples of species neo-endemism in Iran, Anatolia, and the Caucasus. Given the critical conservation status of these species, it is necessary to identify their suitable habitats for prioritizing conservation measures. We modeled ecological niche of each species based on four ...
